Zambian music has had its fair share of dynamic duos and groups. Remember Black Muntu or Shatel. Well prolific collectives have been few and far between since. The last 10 years have seen only Zone Fam reap from raw potential. They are the only Zambian act to win a Channel O music video award. But that didnt last. Jay Rox may have lead the way but Tim and Dope G followed through with their own solo projects. 2wo1ne seemed to be favourable competition but they just didn't seem to take off. Krytic may have comeback with his debut offerring in 2015, but you begin to wonder if they don't know there is power in numbers. Urban Hype have been consistent since they're arrival even matching Zone Fams feat of an international deal with Taurus Music. But there success on the international scene has yet to be impressive. The fastest growing movement in Zambian Music today are calling themselves the New Wave. This is where the fastest duo in Zambian music takes centre stage. The Fake are no doubt dubbed next to break on the international market. With "ex like where" playing on MTVbase we can only wish them the best in their endeavours. But they aren't the only collective knocking on the international door. AB x ETA & C-Street have been buzzing under the radar for quite sometime. The duo we are most interested in is Lady Vogue & Jedi. Not many duos have both genders, it always a treat when the battle of the sexes emerges. But this year we may have been introduced to Zambias biggest group since Ghetto Link. With 7 members strong REBELZ emerged with Days in the Hill. A 12 track playlist that could easily steal the year simply because of the raw talent the tape houses. They made a statement in August releasing REBELZ to the Street. A joint project with C-Street, showing that relationships in the industry between Labels exists.10iW (Names Martian & David Bliss) exploded this year aswell and not too far behind are Zambian Hip Hop Award nominees Ikko Ace & Muko the Entertainer. And then Kings Only debut single featuring Willz Mr Nyopole showed that the New Wave is willing to embrace acts who paved the way. We'll be looking forward to collaborations between our established artists and the new kids. Latest entry is definitely TEA GANG. What can I say, Off The Top is brilliant. 2019 looks certain to produce more collectives capable of giving the international market a run for its money. Let's just hope our new rising stars have figured out the mojo to make it erven bigger than Zone Fam.
